Iris in Mauve

Iris in Mauve
Watercolor on Hot Press Legion Paper, 9" x 12"
Available at $20 plus $10 shipping.

This one is on Hot Press paper, a surface I don't normally choose, since it's very smooth. But it seemed to work okay, as long as I took it slowly. The blending isn't quite as easy, and seems to work best if I wet the entire surface to be painted beforehand.

Bright Pink Iris

Bright Pink Iris
Watercolor on Legion CP Paper, 9" x 12"
Available at $25 plus $10 shipping.

If you're not too proud to beg, and I'm not, you can sometimes get good art freebies from different companies. I asked and got some nice samples from the Legion Paper Company, including this cold press, and a pad of hot press, which I haven't tried yet. I'll do a couple more pieces before I review the paper, but it's certainly worth the trade. Free samples for fair reviews.

A Summer Day in June - SOLD

A Summer Day in June
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $30 plus $10 shipping.

Another Notan study, then adding form thru midtones and color.
I took a couple of photos at the beginning, then forgot to keep shooting.
Here's the Notan:

And an additional process shot:
And after that, I just kept going to the end.

Forest Sketch with Notan - SOLD

Forest Sketch with Notan
Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

I've been listening to some videos about Notan by Dianne Mize, who has tons of great information, much of it free, online. Here's a link if you're interested. Compose is simply her blog. Anyway, much there to read and explore. So I tried thinking in terms of dark and light for this one. I really like the Notan sketch. Then I built the midtones and then the highlights on top. A fun way to work.

Haven't posted in a couple of days since I've been working on a couple of commissions.
It was time to play!

Black and White Strawberries - SOLD

Black and White Strawberries
 Oil on Canvas Panel, 6" x 8"
SOLD at $20 plus $10 shipping.

I've been working on a fairly complex commission piece, and had some strawberries left over.
So today I grabbed a small canvas panel, and found the best of the berries, and did this little guy.
What do you think? Too stark?

Drama in the Garden - SOLD

Drama in the Garden
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $30 plus $10 shipping.

I decided on something simple and dramatic today, and what could be more of both than a single, beautifully colored iris. Still and always my favorite flower.

Spring Creek

Spring Creek
Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 16"
Available at $45 plus $10 shipping.

I revised the one from 5/23/17, figured it had been sitting around long enough. Sometimes it's fun to just "go for it" on one of these older pieces, see what happens. I punched up the color considerably.

Pines and Lake Sketch - SOLD

Pines and Lake Sketch
Oil on Canvas Panel, 6" x 8"
SOLD at $20 plus $10 shipping.

This one is a sketch, done with a large brush, even though the canvas panel is fairly small. You can see how rough and sketchy the brush marks are here. I wanted a landscape, loose, today, after the radishes yesterday, which were pretty complex. I am studying the work of Katheryn Stats, who is an awesome painter out of Utah. You can see her work here, and see how I'm trying to imitate her colors and style and brushwork. I guess every artist has ideals, painters that they would like to follow.

Radishes on Red Plate - SOLD

Radishes on Red Plate
Oil on GessoBord, 6" x 6" x 3/8"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

Detail of Side Painted Below:

This one is an easy hang. There is a hole for hanging in the back, and the 3/8" sides, top and bottom are painted as a continuation of the front view. No framing needed!
I wasn't sure what I was going to paint today, but when I stopped at the Food Pantry for my monthly food allotment, there was a choice of two fresh veggies. I chose these guys to paint! (Plus some salad greens.)

Cannon Alley Two

Cannon Alley Two
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
Available at $35 plus $10 shipping.

So, with a good covering of bug spray and a hat to keep my hair out of my eyes, I ventured out again today. I was much calmer this time. Sat a little ways off the path, so any cars could get by me, and from where I was sitting, I could see the back end of one of the houses, a little beige house. The sun was bright, so there is an intensity to the colors.

June Rose - SOLD

June Rose
Oil on GessoBord, 8" x 8" x 3/8"
SOLD at $40 plus $10 shipping.
See Side Detail Below:

This one has a hanging hole in the back, and is painted around the 3/8" sides, top and bottom, so no frame is needed. It's a feature a lot of my collectors really like.

Where Does the Sun Find You?

Where Does the Sun Find You?
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
Available at $30 plus $10 shipping.
Detail (Close-Up) Below:

This one is done with a palette knife, from imagination. It has a little story.
I started it last night, and got half way, and hated it. Was about to scrape the whole canvas off, then decided I could still do that today if I still hated it. But today it seemed to have some possibilities, so I finished it. Glad I didn't scrape it. It's one of my high texture pieces, done just with the tip and sides of the knife. You can see the texture in the detail photo.

Light Lavender Iris - SOLD

Light Lavender Iris
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 10" x 8"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

There were so many "frills" on this iris that I felt like I was trying to channel Georgia. Just the blended organic feel of things here. Hope you like it.

To the Meadow

To the Meadow
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
Available at $125 plus $10 shipping.

This is again, a larger landscape, and took a couple of days to complete.
I'm really pretty happy with it; like the mood and feeling of it.
You can click on the image to see it larger.

Woodland Gem - SOLD

Woodland Gem
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $30 plus $10 shipping.

I generally don't brag on my own work, but I'm just tickled with how nicely this one turned out. So I'm calling it a "gem" because I think it is. The bit of lavender in the sky, the pink tinge to the road, the subtle way the trees along the road in the background came out, the soft shadows in the road, like an overcast day...all nice. I'm happy with it.

Limes in the Limelight - SOLD

Limes in the Limelight
Oil on GessoBord, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

6/10/17: I've lightened the shadows, and taken another photo in natural light.
Big difference!

Next to the lemons in the display case at the Natural Foods store, so pretty.
The greens are tricky, though, as green usually is.

Row of Strawberries - SOLD

Row of Strawberries
Oil on Canvas Panel, 4" x 8"
SOLD at $20 plus $10 shipping.

The berries at the Natural Foods store were so beautiful and big, I just could not resist.
This one is small, and there is a tiny corner where I didn't paint yet, a dry place to hold the canvas while I painted it. (bottom left) That will be covered as soon as I can handle it.

Cannon Street Back Alley - SOLD

It was such a gorgeous day today, that after I did my revisions this morning, I gathered my gear and walked to our back alley. (Just in the backyard.) It's the way some folks on Cannon get to their back parking, and I think it's just lovely. (The ditch is where the frogs congregate to serenade at night.)

Cannon Street Back Alley
Oil on Canvas Panel, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $45 plus $10 shipping.

I'll probably do this one again, without forgetting what I forgot today...bug spray, a hat to keep my hair from getting in my face... I found colors very hard to judge in the shade, looking into the sun.
But had a great time painting.

Here are the revisions for today.

Pansy Face, 6" x 6", Oil on GessoBord, Available at $25 plus shipping

Strawberries Revised, 6" x 6", Oil on GessoBord, Available at $25 plus shipping

The revised versions have already been added to my Gallery on DPW. You can buy these last two by going to my Gallery on Daily Paintworks,  HERE.

Lemon with Crease - SOLD

Lemon with Crease'
Oil on GessoBord, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping

Back to cruising the Natural Foods store, picking up things like Hummus and Pesto, yum, and found this unusual lemon, with a crease, which I thought was appealing. A little dramatic lighting, and we're good to go.

It felt good to paint another landscape, full of sunshine and dappled patterns.
My kind of painting!

Available at $25 plus $10 shipping.
Click the button below to buy through Daily PaintWorks

I figured out how to photograph purple, a little triumph for me. I only use the yellowish lights I have, the overhead and a couple of yellow lights in my pole lights. I turn off all my daylight bulbs, and voila! I've got purple.

The Downward Glance - SOLD

The Downward Glance
Oil on Gessobord, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

I thought I was done with the pears,  but I had this Gessobord coated with red/pink tinted Gesso, and wanted to see if I liked the surface better, (I did, it wasn't as slippery)... the pears were handy...so you know how it goes. One more time with these same lovely pears. They're hanging on.

Spring Green Creek - NA

Spring Green Creek
Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 16"
Reworked on 6/15/17

A landscape was just the ticket for today, one with a lot of swish and foliage, and not much detail.
Inspired by all the light and delicate Spring greens out these past couple of weeks. This one is quite soft and quiet.

Strawberries on Patterned Plate - SOLD

Strawberries on Patterned Plate
Oil on Gessobord, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

The plate is part of a nice set of bowls and small bread and butter plates that I found at 2nd Avenue, a thrift shop that we loved going to in Laurel.  I had intended to do a landscape today, but I was seduced by the berries at the Farmer's Market yesterday, and actually ate the rest before the painting was done. Dark red and juicy all the way thru, so fresh.

Pears for FD - SOLD

Pears for FD - SOLD
Oil on GessoBord, 6" x 6"

Another version of the pears in dramatic light.
I think  I've gotten my money's worth out of these sweet pears.
Now to let them ripen completely, and enjoy them!

Purple Iris

Purple Iris
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
Available at $30 plus $10 shipping.

This is a revision of an earlier piece, and I think improved.
Although last week I found s stand of beautiful frilly lavender irises that I will have fun with going forward. Took bunches of photos.

Pears with Drama - SOLD

Pears with Drama
Oil on Gessobord, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

I could not see using these lovely pears just once, so here they are again. (They were expensive, organic, from the Natural Foods Store! I looked for lumps and nice stems, an artists' way of picking fruit!)  Today I went for drama with these little guys. I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.
