Continuous Line Sunflowers - SOLD

Continuous Line Sunflowers
Watercolor and Marker on Arches Watercolor Paper, 12" x16"
SOLD at $22 plus $8 shipping.

Using the same sunflowers in the same thrift shop vase as yesterday, I simply turned the paper around, and had a much better time. In Sketchbook Skool this week, we are working with continuous line drawing (where you don't lift the pen off the page, but backtrack and cross over if you need to), and watercolor, and this was my homework submission.

Funky Summer Still Life - SOLD

Funky Summer Still Life
Ink and Watercolor on Watercolor Paper, 12" x 16"
SOLD at $15 plus $8 shipping.

Our new assignment in Sketchbook Skool was to do a continuous line drawing in ink, and then to use watercolor over top. I loved my still life set up, but the first two attempts were sad at best. This is my third try, still not great, but for now, it'll have to do. The lawn needs mowing.

Self Portrait in Carbon Pencil - SOLD

Self Portrait in Carbon Pencil
Carbon Pencils on Bristol Vellum Paper, Paper Size 14" x 17"
Image Size: 10" x 12"
SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.

If I cover up the left eye, this does look something like me (minus the double chins and wattles.) Actually, if I cover either eye. Which tells me that the eyes are off. But a likeness is really tough. This is part of this weeks' assignment in Sketchbook Skool, where it's "selfie" week. I am very much enjoying the skool.

There is a lovely creek that runs along The Devil's Backbone, a natural rock formation just outside of Marlinton, WV. The creek is variously called Beech Creek or Knapp's Creek. Maybe it's like some streets and changes its name as it meanders. Below are a couple of photos of the Devil's Backbone, truly impressive in person. It also has an interesting history.

We are back in Sketchbook Skool, second session, and the Theme this six weeks is "Seeing." Our first assignments involved deep-looking, trying to really "see" the details in a piece of toast, and then doing a Fast and Slow sketch, doing a gesture drawing in paint or wash, then going over it in ink to find as many details as we could. My entry for the Fast Slow is below, but I enjoyed the technique so much that I wanted to do something a bit more serious for DPW. These are onions from church this past Sunday (someone has a food ministry, collects leftovers from some of the organic stores in the area, brings them in for the church folks.)

Here's my Fast Slow sketch:

Plein Air Brook - SOLD

SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.

This one started life as a plein air painting, but after about a half hour, the mosquitoes won and I gave up.
I finished it today by walking and standing to study the scene, then back inside to cool down and paint. It's not exactly what I was seeing, but pretty anyway.

The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is a PB&J sandwich. I really wouldn't have considered it, except that one of my collectors wrote a quick email, hoping that I would try it. Okay, LP, here you go!

Daffodil Aglow - SOLD

Daffodil Aglow
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $25 plus $8 shipping.

I had oodles of yellow paint leftover from a painting in my big project, so this one was to use up some of the paint. Too expensive to waste. I think it came out nice, loose and with a bit of drama.

Hidden Pool

Hidden Pool
Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12"
Available at $27, with shipping included.

My little granddaughter, Kayla, wanted to paint on my lap on Saturday, while she was here for the weekend, so I let her play with my oils and a canvas panel. When she was done, and frustrated (she's six, and was trying to paint "Elsa's Castle" from Frozen) I just took the canvas, and spread the paint already there, as an undercoat. (Yes, she had on old clothes, and yes, those clothes became paint rags.) So this is a palette knife painting on that canvas. I've used the palette knife in two ways, as a frosting spreader tool, and as a pencil tool. If you click to see this one larger, you'll be able to tell.

Down the little bank, jump across the stream, cut through the field, and you're there, at the barn and outbuildings of this farm in the foothills.

Here's a detail (close up) of  the palette knife work.

This one was done with a red undercoat, then painted in acrylics, loosely, and then palette knife in oil over the entire painting. Time consuming, but effective. The tip of the palette knife gives me an almost pencil-like control, over stroking and blending and placement of colors.
